Granny flat

A granny flat is a freestanding, single-unit apartment building located behind a single-family home in a residential area. Historically, granny flats provided affordable housing but modern zoning codes often restrict or forbid them.

A single-unit apartment located above the garage of single-family home is referred to as a garage apartment.
