High Occupancy Vehicle

A High Occupancy Vehicle (or HOV), is a vehicle with a relatively high occupancy. Usually, the term is defined with reference to specific local regulations for the use of HOV lanes. In some areas, any car with two or more people (i.e. the driver and at least one passenger) qualifies as an HOV. In other areas, three or four people may be required.
