A pedestrian-oriented area or development has evolved or been designed so that one may comfortably walk from one location to another. In addition to being walkable, a pedestrian-oriented design is one which encouragese strolling, window-shopping, and other pedestrian activities, provides a mix of commercial and civic uses (offices, a mix of different retail types, libraries and other government and social service outlets). In order to make walking more pleasant, visually interesting and useful details such as streetscaping, water features, wayfinding elements, public art, and street-level retail.
The tenets of New Urbanism and transit oriented development embrace pedestrian-oriented development as a way to increase the neighborly feel and sense of place present and to persuade people out of their automobiles.
