Robert Moses, through his leadership and control of early urban renewal programs, dramatically reshaped New York City and its surrounding environs. Under his direction, blighted areas were demolished to make way for large public housing projects and new highways. He is also responsible for creating a string of parks, beaches, pools, and public amenities throughout the New York area.
Jane Jacobs and other early critics of typical urban planning were writing and acting largely in response to Moses' projects.
