Transit vehicle

A transit vehicle is a vehicle used in public transit systems. As a general rule, it includes:

• Light rail trains (trams)
• Heavy rail trains (metro, subways, elevated lines)
• Commuter rail trains
• Motorbuses
• Trolley buses
• Van pool vehicles
• Automated guideway vehicles (people movers)
• Demand-Response vehicles

When the United States Department of Transportation gives statistic for transit vehicle-miles, a vehicles is defined as each individual car of a mutli-car light rail, heavy rail, or commuter rail train. Thus, a three-car light rail train that travels 100 miles accumulates 300 hundred vehicle-miles.
